The Challenge Cal-Ore’s network was struggling to meet the data capacity demands of its customers. The operator needed to find a solution that would allow it to greatly increase capacity, but also to achieve the wireless coverage and NLOS performance needed to profitably serve a rural community.
The Solution Cal-Ore selected PureWave’s award winning Quantum 6600 base stations in the semi-licensed 3.65GHz band.
The Result An overlay network based on PureWave Quantum 6636 WiMAX base stations achieved the same coverage offered by Cal-Ore’s 900MHz and 2.4GHz existing network, while increasing capacity fivefold.
900MHz-like Performance in the 3.65GHz band After extensive testing, Cal-Ore selected PureWave’s Quantum 6636 Mobile WiMAX base stations as their new infrastructure solution.
“When we began to roll-out 3.65GHz equipment one of our main concerns was maximizing the coverage area”, said Charles Boening, Cal-Ore’s Network Manager. “After all, the reason operators are still using old, slow equipment in the noisy 900MHz band is because of the band’s supposedly superior propagation characteristics. However, we were excited to discover that using PureWave’s gear we were able to achieve similar coverage in the 3.65GHz band as we were seeing with our legacy 900MHz equipment but deliver up to 5 times the capacity we were seeing with our legacy system.”
“From a performance and operations perspective, we are very happy with the PureWave gear,” added Boening. “Our installers are able to convert 10 to 15 customers to the new network each day, and customers are seeing stable, solid performance and service speeds that meet today’s bandwidth hungry applications.”
Cal-Ore Communications covers an area of more than 200 square miles and serves a population of approximately 50,000 people, bringing broadband services to business and residents of rural communities in California and Oregon. With the new base stations deployed, Cal-Ore is able to offer service packages that feature download speeds of up to 12Mbps and will soon begin to offer voice services as well. The company is currently operating 16 PureWave Quantum base stations and plans to overlay its entire network with PureWave equipment in the 3.65GHz band.
